Belgian National Lottery. Even if you’re not a football fan (we daren’t call it soccer), you’ve no doubt been caught up in the spirit of the 2022 FIFA World Cup championship. As one of the most-watched sports tournaments in the world. Its influence is undeniable. And sometimes stretches even further than simply captivating spectators in the stands or through the TV screen.

Case in point. The Belgian National Lottery. Given that there is often an increase in sports betting over major championships. There can often be a rise in irresponsible gambling behaviour at the same time. This year, in order to protect punters and avoid harmful gambling practices, the Belgian National Lottery has officially halted all forms of sports betting advertising across all media. Until the end of the World Cup on 18 December.

Belgian National Lottery gives a red card to sports betting

Vincent Van Petegrem, Federal Finance Minister, explains: “The National Lottery is taking a leading role in protecting player. And fighting gambling addiction. At a World Cup, the sport and supporter experience should be central.

“Advertising for sports betting should have no place in broadcasts or reports via television, radio and written press. The Belgian National Lottery is already setting a good example by not advertising its sports betting on these channels.

“A study by the Commission on the 2018 World Cup showed that half of the new registrations were first-time punters. The Belgian National Lottery would continue to play a leading role in the fight against gambling addiction and channelling players towards safer gaming environments in the coming years. This will include low play and deposit limits. As well as sponsorship and advertising restrictions. Measures will be taken to this end, which I as the minister in charge of the National Lottery will soon propose to parliament in new policy letter.”

Well done Belgium on promoting responsible gambling. A note that we could all take and use to our benefit. Good luck to your own team in the World Cup. And if you do place any bets, make sure they’re wise, informed and affordable.
