Gus Hansen Loses $1.5 Million in a Week
Poker pros are known to cash in big and drop massive chunks of change in a very short amount of time. It is the nature of their profession as high rolling gamblers. The best poker pros win more often than they lose, but this week, one ill-fated green-felt specialist suffered a tremendous downswing that cost him $1.5 million – in a single week!

Gus Hansen, famed “Great Dane” of poker and distinguished Full Tilt Pro, lost a whopping $1.5 million in a seven day period at Full Tilt Poker, placing him right at the top of the list for most money lost at the online poker room in 2010. Among big name pros, Hansen is now the lowest of bottom feeders on the list of online poker money winners.
It’s interesting to see Gus Hansen having such a rough time with his online poker game of late. The Great Dane is universally recognized as one of the most fearsome competitors in the circuit. His presence in live poker games, cash tables and tournaments alike, is one not to be reckoned with.
Gus Hansen has quite the background in major live poker events. He’s hauled in one WSOP bracelet, one main event win at the 2007 Aussie Millions and three WPT titles. All told, he’s raked in over $7.6 million in live tournament winnings and countless millions at cash game tables around the world.
But the Full Tilt Pro just hasn’t been achieving the same level of intimidation of the virtual felt. It almost looked as if Hansen was about to turn things around at Full Tilt in September. He was doing rather well, finishing at +$200k for the month; though that was just the tip of the iceberg in reclaiming what he’s dropped at Full Tilt over the year.
Then October came and the ominous month brought terrible fortune for the Dane. One week of online poker play resulted in a one and a half million dollar loss, compiling his total losses at Full Tilt Poker for 2010 up to about $3.5 million at present. That’s an awful lot of green for most of us, but Gus doesn’t even seem to notice. He continues to grind away at the online poker tables unscathed by the mounting deficit.
If you think that sounds like a risky move, let’s go back over Gus Hansen’s entire existence of Full tilt Pro membership. Since signing on to endorse the online poker room several years back, his wallet has seeped an astounding $10.5 million through the online poker site. That’s an incomprehensible amount of money to most of us, and to lose it all playing cards at an online poker room is all the more unfathomable.
Then again, that is one reason so many of us admire the Great Dane. He is persistent, strong willed and extremely intimidating to his live opponents. His countless millions won on live cash tables easily counters anything he’s shaken off in online poker play.
